Answering the Ocean’s ‘Open Call’
New England women working hard, long hours as fishermen on the open ocean reveal how they hold their own in the traditionally male preserve of commercial fishing. In a time of seismic change, they bring subtle forms of adaptation and innovation as they respond to the same ‘call of the sea’ men have embraced for centuries.
Think of the New England fishermen and the Winslow Homer images that come to mind. Answering the Ocean’s ‘Open Call’ is a similarly evocative and atmospheric feature-length documentary film that turns that image on its head, taking us on to commercial fishing vessels in Southern New England, where increasing numbers of women are fishing commercially.
